This is one of
the most important questions we ask our new patients. Their answer helps us
understand their oral health and allows us to determine what to do if we spot
problems such as gingivitis, tooth sensitivity, and plaque build-up. If it’s
been a long time since you had professional teeth cleaning, we may recommend a dental deep cleaning.
Deep cleaning
is one of the general oral care procedures we offer here at Lynnwood Dental
Studio. We may recommend it if we see too much tartar build-up and notice the
symptoms of gingivitis (the early stage of gum disease). Also known as scaling
and root planing, deep cleaning addresses the excessive debris and tartar
accumulation in the roots of your teeth.
If you have
never experienced deep cleaning, it’s normal to have a lot of questions about
it. What happens during the procedure? Will it hurt? This blog shares the
answers to those questions so you can understand how dental deep cleaning can help improve your oral health.
Let’s explore its importance and what to expect from it.
Deep cleaning
versus regular dental cleaning
Regular
cleaning keeps your teeth clean to prevent gum disease and cavities. We
recommend having it done at least twice a year. But if you haven’t had your
teeth cleaned for a long time, deep cleaning may become necessary to remove
tartar build-up and prevent further bacterial infection.
In deep
cleaning, we use manual scraping and an ultrasonic device to effectively remove
tartar and bacteria colonies. Our goal is to promote healthier gums to prevent
tooth loss.
A must for
optimum oral health.
Deep cleaning
is one of the ways to address gum disease and bacterial infections to prevent
deeper gum pockets and tooth loss. It helps restore your oral health so you
won’t worry about persistent bleeding gums and expensive tooth restorations
down the road.
What happens during dental deep cleaning?
First, scaling removes plaque
and tartar from both the surface of your teeth and the root surfaces. We often
combine this with irrigation, using an antimicrobial solution to reduce
bacteria below the gum line.
Then, root
planing smooths the root surfaces by removing a thin layer of dentin and
cementum, which contain toxins and bacteria. By removing these along with any
lingering tartar, we encourage your gums to heal properly.
More benefits
of deep cleaning
Dental
deep cleaning isn’t just
about disease prevention and tooth protection. Since it removes plaque and
tartar, it improves the appearance of teeth. Plus, it eliminates bacteria that
cause bad breath.
