Expert Deep Cleaning: Maintaining Healthier Gums

Regular brushing and flossing can help you maintain healthier and good-looking teeth. And by committing to regular dental cleanings at least twice a year, you lower your risk of developing gum diseases and cavities even further. In contrast, without proper hygiene and routine cleaning, tartar can build up and start causing bacterial infections that can lead to bleeding gums and deeper pockets. If not treated, you could lose your teeth. At Lynnwood Dental Studio, our dentist offers deep cleaning to address those problems.

Did your dentist recommend deep cleaning or do you think you need it? Read on as we explain what it is and why it’s necessary for healthier gums.

Comparing regular and deep cleaning

Regular cleaning keeps your teeth clean to prevent gum diseases and cavities. Deep cleaning, however, is more intensive because it targets tartar and debris that may have built up around the roots of your teeth. Also known as scaling and root planing, we recommend this procedure if our dentist sees that you have excessive tartar buildup that’s causing gum infections.

Our dentist performs deep cleaning using manual scraping and an advanced ultrasonic tool to remove colonies of bacteria and tartar more thoroughly and effectively. The treatment promotes healthier gums that reduce your risk of tooth loss and bone deterioration.

The process

Deep cleaning involves two stages:

·         Scaling

In deep cleaning, scaling aims to remove plaque and calculus from the surface of the tooth crown and roots. In most cases, our dentist includes an irrigation process with the scaling tool to provide an antimicrobial agent beneath the gums to minimize oral bacteria.

·         Root planing

The next step is root planing, a specific treatment that removes surface dentin and cementum that is usually laden with bacteria, tartar, and toxins. This is an important procedure that eliminates all those unwanted elements to promote healing.

In addition, our dentist will polish your teeth and clean contact areas with tiny brushes, dental picks, or floss. The treatment finishes with a fluoride treatment or varnish to remineralize the enamel.

Do you need it?

Our dentist can check whether deep cleaning is necessary in your case during your routine examination. They will measure the gum socket depth to determine whether you have gingivitis or periodontitis. At Lynnwood Dental Studio, we usually recommend deep cleaning if you have an existing gum disease or show symptoms. Likewise, it will benefit you if you have stubborn tartar.

Ensuring healthier gums without the ouch

Deep cleaning may cause discomfort, but don’t worry because our dentist will use local anesthetics to numb the gums during scaling and root planing to minimize pain.
